8-Bit Author Tournament

"Ready to Fight!" 8-Bit Author Tournament originally started Early 2016 as an open-ended comic where authors could create/use created characters to fight in one-on-one battles. Today, the comic has evolved into its own kind of experience, featuring new faces, old locations, and questions better left unanswered.

I need opinions: can the host have the power to summon characters based on the stage? These characters would be neutral, meaning they would be an obstacle for both characters, and after a certain point, would be defeated.

Wow. Just. Wow.

I wonder I'd be able to make this kind of stuff if I'd use something better than Paint.

Maybe. But it would take a lot of time to learn. And I'm lazy.

I will smite thee with my Pixlr-made trashy MS paint sprited page!

Reply Brawlitup99, January 4th, 2016, 7:52 am

@Crash guy: I use GameMaker 8.1 for my sprite needs. I can help you use it, if you want!

@kmarwx: Where did you find the background? I'm creating a credit page. It's almost up.

Reply kmarwx, January 4th, 2016, 8:45 am

Got it from VGMaps, looks like the person who ripped the background was Revned if you need to credit them specifically.

@Brawlitup99: When it comes to sprites I think I'll be good with good ol' Paint. I'm just saying that (for me) it'd be close to imposible to make that kind of effects as in this page in Paint.

As for your idea of enemies in stage I think it's good, but what if 1st author makes page, then you'd edit the page adding enemy (Let's say 1 enemy for 2/3 pages) and the 2nd author that is fighting would have to do something about this enemy you added in his next page?

I know it sounds strange but at least we wouldn't have to worry about 87 enemies in the fight and you'd choose when or how the enemy will appear/attack.

@Crash guy: What I meant was some big character from that game being summoned mid-match. Ex. for here would be Mega Man or Napalm Man.

Reply kmarwx, January 4th, 2016, 10:06 am

I personally don't think it would be a good idea, as having a third party randomly introduced into the fight would distract one or both of the fighters from the actual tournament match, and would just make the fight needlessly cluttered. In addition, the summoned character would need to be neutral, but in practice would likely lean towards one fighter or the other; the only way I see that working out is if they were stuck in a confined space and attacked anyone who entered that space, but then they could just be negated entirely by the fighters staying away from them.

@Brawlitup99: Oh, In that case I agree with Kmarwx. I tought that it would be a simple enemy like this tiger from Napalman stage, an enemy that would be easy oppoment and wouldn't interfee with battle too much.

You're doing god's work here, Cam

Reply youngsparky, January 5th, 2016, 4:22 am

@Brawlitup99: I think that would be a bad idea for the same reason as kmarwx. Although, me and Cascade will be fighting because we want a bounty on Fire Man, so maybe having Fire Man as a neutral enemy would work for that fight specifically.

Reply Brawlitup99, January 5th, 2016, 7:16 am

@kmarwx: ...I should have you make all my decisions, from now on. Thanks!

Reply Brawlitup99, January 5th, 2016, 7:18 am

@youngsparky: Maybe. But if that were the case, would that mean that someone like....I dunno, able to appear in a fight such as Ian's and Crash's?

Reply kmarwx, January 6th, 2016, 9:39 pm

dude thats kinda gay

Reply youngsparky, January 7th, 2016, 3:29 am

@Brawlitup99: it's very subjective. I think a third party in Rick v Blue would make it very cluttered and confusing. Although since me and Cascade are fighting because our characters want to kill Fire Man for the bounty, Fire Man showing up as a neutral enemy would fit better there, especially with there being less explosive attacks to clutter the field and such.

Reply Brawlitup99, January 7th, 2016, 9:48 am

@kmarwx: Pretty sure it is gay.
I mean, nothing against gays or anything, but just realize that's the message!

@Brawlitup99: If we're to say this is like a comic version of competitive Smash, well, then we should take the rules of Smash tournaments into consideration. A lot of Smash stages are banned in tournaments because of their stage hazards, which could tilt the balance unfairly in one person's favor. So it might not be a good idea to create even a neutral enemy for stages. Keep in mind a lot of Smash stage counterpicks are based on the kind of footing and platforms there are, and the ground you get is probably the most important non-character MU influence you can get in Smash.

@youngsparky: Considering the stage is very cluttered and winding, like most Mega Man stages, it would definitely be a bad idea.

@Brawlitup99: what about bottomless pits? Could you possibly force your opponent into one and edgeguard it for an instant KO? I feel that would be a bit off, considering our single elimination system, and especially the fact that Quirby and I can fly and some of the others can't.

Edit: What about blast zones? Potentially, depending on how big the stage is and your moveset, you could combo someone above the top of the stage. Are we even going to have blast zones?

Reply Crash guy, February 17th, 2016, 11:03 am

@bluefiredragon: I don't think there should be any blast zones since it's fight till one faints. When I played Brawl on stamina mode I always set gravity to high(or was it low? The one that made you heavier) so you couldn't blast someone off the map.

Of course one of the fighters could blast the other out of the map but they should continue the battle by taking on the next map. For example, Let's say you used Hyper Beam on Rick and blasted him far into sky off Napalm Stage, but It's decided that Rick could survive that and not faint, so the fight's still on. Then, you can do two things: Either Rick landed very hard in middle of stage or he ended up going out far into space - into Star Man stage and you followed him.

That speech was WAAY too long and pointless...
